100Ways to Celebrate Downtown "Holiday Event"

In honor of the Centennial of Downtown Davis’ good neighbor, UC Davis, the Davis Downtown Business Association presents this list of 100 unique ways to celebrate the holiday season in Downtown Davis. Best yet, many are low cost or no cost!

1) SHOP! Supporting local, independent retailers is a gift you can give to all of your friends and neighbors in Davis.
2) Take a stroll just to see the festive window displays created by Downtown
retailers.
3) Participate in the community tree lighting event, Thursday, December 4, 6:30 p.m., in E Street Plaza.
4) Drink hot cocoa outside Peet's while gazing at the holiday tree lights
across the street.
5) Watch holiday travelers come and go at the Davis Transit Depot.
6) Check out uniquely-designed Hanukkah menorahs at Davis Ace Housewares.
7) Enjoy a scoop of eggnog ice cream at Baskin-Robbins.
8) Catch "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" at The Varsity Theatre, Thursday, December 4, four screenings beginning at 6:00 p.m.
9) Attend a religious service at a Downtown house of worship.
10) Think snow! Check out the latest gear at Ken's Bike and Ski or Ground Zero.

11) Take a horse-drawn carriage ride through Downtown, Thursday, December 4, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., departing from The Varsity Theatre.
12) Ring sleigh bells (or any bells) at Watermelon Music.
13) Photograph Downtown scenes to send as customized holiday greetings.
14) Enjoy a toasty outdoor fire on a chilly night at Bistro 33.
15) Drool over the glass case at Candy House of Davis.
16) Plan an all-organic and locally-farmed holiday meal with visits to the
Davis Food Co-op and the Davis Farmers' Market.
17) Take a holiday from cooking and cleaning and have your holiday meal at one of more than five dozen Downtown eateries.
18) Make personalized holiday jewelry at A Better Place to Bead.
19) Try on something dreamy at The Wardrobe and build New Year's plans to
fit the dress.
20) Visit Santa and his elves in E Street Plaza, Thursday, December 4, 6:30
- 8:30 p.m.

21) Plug in and catch up on holiday e-mail over hot cider and ginger cookies
at Mishka's Café.
22) Gather supplies at The Paint Chip to make your own holiday greetings and decorations.
23) Visit the forest in Davis Ace’s nursery and pick the perfect holiday tree.
24) Assemble a group of friends and go caroling on the streets of Downtown.
25) Join in the fun of the annual Children’s Parade, departing the Davis Food Co-op, Thursday, December 4, 6:00 p.m.
26) Allow yourself a decadent mid-day holiday treat at Ciocolat.
27) Catch a holiday flight - - of select red wines at Tucos Wine Market and Cafe.
28) Celebrate a “Feliz Navidad” with a mole burrito at El Mariachi Taqueria.
29) Recycle this holiday section of The Enterprise to wrap gifts the green way.
30) Escape to the loft at The Avid Reader and read The Night Before Christmas.

31) Address holiday cards while warming up with a peppermint latte at Starbuck's.
32) Learn more about the needs of local non-profits while visiting more than a dozen of your favorite merchants, during the Holiday Open House and punch reception, Thursday, December 4, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
33) Select gifts after work on Thursday December 11, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., during the “Share the Joy” extended hours event, featuring more than 20 retailers.
34) Find the perfect holiday CD at Armadillo Music or Dimple Records.
35) Decorate your bike for the season, ride it Downtown and add to the ambiance.
36) Set down your shopping bags and rest your weary legs with a nosh at Crepeville.
37) Select the right champagne for New Year’s at Valley Wine Co.
38) Pick out a magazine at Newsbeat and send yourself a holiday gift subscription.
39) Explore the Downtown urban forest and collect leaves and other natural matter to enhance your holiday decorating.
40) ‘Tis the season to give something back – stop by Davis Community Meals or Tree Davis to volunteer your time.

41) Rent a holiday-themed classic film at Blockbuster Video.
42) Return that movie and get another - - or, watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” a second time.
43) Stay Downtown and watch a new movie, such as the family drama, “Nothing Like the Holidays”, debuting at theatres December 12.
44) Enjoy the festive sounds of the Davis Chorale, performing December 13, 11:00 a.m., at the Davis Farmers’ Market and December 14, 4:00 p.m., at Davis Community Church.
45) Check out the 2008 holiday stamps at the Downtown Davis Post Office.
46) Commit a random act of kindness – pre-pay for the person behind you in line at a Downtown coffee or yogurt shop.

53) Listen to local high school jazz musicians in E Street Plaza, Thursday, December 4, 6:45 – 8:30 p.m.
54) Stop and smell the flowers in a holiday bouquet at Mengali’s.
55) Make time for the Dried Fruit and Nuts Holiday Tasting at the Davis Farmers’ Market on December 6.
56) Take a holiday outing to see the California Bicycle Museum’s vintage collection, on display at the 3rd and B Teen Center, Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. – noon, through December 20.
57) Pick out a tux at James Anthony Men’s Wear and make New Year’s plans with the woman who bought the dress at The Wardrobe in #19 above.
58) Select a gift at De Colores Fair Trade Gifts, and tell your friend you traveled the world to find the right gift.

61) Get ready for holiday parties with a hairstyling, manicure or spa treatment at one of more than two dozen Downtown salons.
62) Take your holiday visitors on a walking tour of Downtown artistic and historic sites.
63) Eat Chinese on Christmas Eve at the Silver Dragon.
64) Eat Vietnamese on Christmas Day at Pho Boc Hoa Viet.
65) View the works of Stephen Braun, Greg Kondos, Corrine Singleton and Clay Vorhees at the John Natsoulas Center for the Arts, December 3 - 28.
66) Visit the Davis Chamber of Commerce and purchase a $3 map of the City. Frame it to give as gift to friend who’s moved away or one who wants to move closer to you.
67) Stage a football game with family and friends at Central Park. Tell them the game is called the “Downtown Bowl”.

100) Cross A Street and stroll the UC Davis campus, the inspiration for “100 Ways to Celebrate”!
