100 ways to commit acts of violence prevention everyday

There are countless actions you can take to prevent violence. If we are to progress into a more peaceful and safer world, it takes commitment from each of us. Violence thrives in an environment of isolation, helplessness, inertia and fear. Your commitment defeats that environment. Here are 100 ways to get started.


  1. VOLUNTEER at your neighborhood school or community organization.
  2. KEEP kids BUSY and productive after school.
  3. SUPPORT your local battered women’s shelter and rape crisis center.
  4. MENTOR a youth.
  5. KEEP kids AWAY from guns, and guns away from kids.
  6. Don’t keep a gun in your house. If you do, lock it up.
  7. MONITOR your family’s movie and television viewing.
  8. GET NEWS of the day from more than one source.
  9. MAKE COMPASSION a part of your management style.
  10. BRING FAIRNESS to your workplace.
  11. TAKE CHARGE of protecting yourself; take a SELF-DEFENSE class.
  12. DON’T LAUGH at rape jokes.
  13. Be an ALLY; STAND UP for someone else.
  14. In an escalating confrontation, LOWER your voice.
  15. BE KIND to the homeless.
  16. LISTEN actively.
  17. SPEND TIME in nature.
  18. OPEN your HEART.
  19. CHANGE your mind.
  20. RESPECT people from other ethnicities and cultures.
  21. VOTE; participate in democracy.
  22. MAKE ROOM for the other.
  23. QUESTION stereotypes about gays and lesbians.
  24. PRACTICE smiling.
  25. LEARN ABOUT RELIGIONS other than your own.
  26. SIT in STILLness everyday.
  27. SPEAK your TRUTH with compassion.
  28. RESTRAIN from making hand gestures while driving.
  29. REDUCE road rage.
  30. Get to KNOW your neighbors.
  31. SHARE responsibility for the safety of everyone’s children.
  32. KNOW your police officers.
  33. POLICE the police.
  34. BE VIGILANT, not a vigilante.
  35. DEVELOP a household safety plan.
  36. Teach children the difference between helpful strangers and harmful ones.
  37. GIVE kids SAFE SPACES.
